Niko, that's just one of the most conceptually beautiful essays I've read! The high aesthetics of it are remarkable! It's like a Turner landscape painting but the subject is the cell and the paint is the printed word. The sheer conceptual beauty of the cell is astounding, mind-boggling. You conveyed that well.

So many elegant experiments described in one essay! But I can't help but find Eratosthenes' approximation of the Earth’s circumference the most impressive. Not only because his calculations were so precise but also because humanity somehow managed to "forget" that the Earth is round for like fifteen centuries 😐

Neat essay! The Kinosita & co. ATP synthase rotation experiments are beautiful and lead to some stunning insights, like the efficiency of the molecular motor being ~80%! I'm a bit surprised you didn't mention Brownian motion -- in so many things (not ATP synthase), this ends up setting the timescales for phenomena, such as communication between neurons (I briefly note this here: https://eighteenthelephant.com/2023/03/22/what-sets-the-speed-of-thought-what-is-biophysics-14/)
