Re Where’s the Synthetic Blood? (Commissioned), I imagine and hope the author(s) are aware of Thomas Chang, from McGill.

Made his first significant contribution to artificial cells, specifically RBCs, from his dorm room....

I believe, if I recall correctly, that blood products he invented are used in the battlefield and have a shelf-life measured in year, at ambient temperature.
